Good Friday is a religious holiday for Christians. The year of Good Friday is either AD 33 or AD 34 when Jesus was Crucified in Jerusalem.

According to the Gospels, People blamed Jesus that he troubled the nation, he tried to stop people from paying taxes to king Caesar and wanted to make himself a King.

Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane by Temple Guards through the help of one of his disciples Judas Iscariot. Judas helped guards to identify Jesus for money (30 pieces of silver). He was sent to Caiaphas for judgment. During the judgment, Jesus called himself the Son of God. The high priest adjusted this as bad speaking about God.

Then, people brought Jesus to the Roman Governor Pontius Pilate and blamed Jesus for troubling the nation. Pilate asked Jesus, but he did not answer. So, Pilate sent him to Galilee King Herod for the judgment, because Jesus was from Galilee. King Herod also did not get any answer from Jesus. Therefore, Pilate told people that Jesus is not guilty. He whipped Jesus and wanted to let him go. But, the chief priests demanded that Jesus should be sentenced to death “because he claimed to be God’s son.”

That was the time for the feast of Passover for romans. At that time, they used to free one of the prisoners. Therefore, Pilate asked people to choose one among Jesus and another criminal to be free. People choose the other person and demanded to crucify Jesus. Pilate had to do so to maintain his position.

Jesus was hung on a cross for six hours in heavy pain and then he lost his spirit. At that time, an earthquake broke the tomb and tore the curtain in the temple from top to bottom. The centurion declared that Jesus was God’s son and he died.

Joseph of Arimathea, a silent follower of Jesus took the body of Jesus, wrapped it in a clean linen shroud, and placed it in his new tomb that had been carved in the rock.

The Bible says, Jesus died on Friday and rose from death on the third day after the death i.e. on Easter Sunday.

Why is the word ‘Good’ used in Good Friday?

On a Friday, Jesus was crucified in Jerusalem and went through a painful death. But, Jesus’ followers celebrate this day as Good Friday. How strange is this? But why?

There are several conceptions to explain why the name is “Good Friday.” The word ‘Good’ may simply be a miss-spelling or miss-pronunciation of the word “God”. There is another concept that the crucifying of Jesus revealed that he is the son of God. Seeing his death and then rising from death, people accepted him as the Son of God and felt guilty. At this, the number of followers of Jesus increased largely. Therefore, that Friday is considered to be a Good Friday for Christians.
